OWNBEY IS UNTOUCHABLE IN DURRENCE LAYNE DLMS TALLADEGA SHORT TRACK RUN

EASTABOGA, AL – John Ownbey was untouchable Wednesday night at Talladega Short Track, as the Cleveland, TN swept the Salute To Freedom 50 for the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series driving the Orr Brother Construction Special.  The win was Ownbey’s second series victory of the season at “The Hornet’s Nest.”

Brandon Williams of Crossville, TN was the only driver able to get close to Ownbey, as he got a nose under him in turn two on lap 20 in heavy lapped traffic.  Once Ownbey was able to break free of the lapped cars, he set sail, only to reach another pack of lapped cars with five to go.

Ownbey used patience to stay in front and take the win, leading all 50 laps of the opening race of the Salute To America Nationals for the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series.  Ownbey swept the program by starting off the night with Boyd Bilt Fabrication Fast Time Award with a lap around the 1/3-mile clay oval in 14.706 seconds.

“My crew worked hard all week to get us here, as we had to repair a lot of damage from last Saturday night’s race,” Ownbey said.  “When we got the car ready to come here, we just used the setup we had when we won here in April.  The track conditions were very similar tonight to what they were then, and it all worked out for us.  We will probably use the same set up when we come back here in October.”

Cruz Skinner of Oxford, AL made a last lap pass on Williams to finish second in the Josh Roberts Trucking Special.  That piece of driving earned the 17-year-old driver the VP Racing Lubricants the Slick Move of the Race Award, and he was also the Cruise With The Champions Rookie of the Race.

Williams hung on for the third spot in the Jeff Woods Construction Special, and fourth went to Durrence Layne Chevrolet National point leader Jake Knowles of Rome, GA in the Knowles Race Parts and Bodies Special.  Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, GA took the fifth spot in the Middle Georgia Roofing CVR and Oakley Johns of Hohenwald, TN was sixth in the Johns Farms Special.

Tyler Wood of Hohenwald, TN finished seventh in the Johns Farms Special and 15-year-old Jake Rainey of Hiram, GA drove the Wren’s Body Shop Special to an eighth-place finish.  Dylan Knowles of Lanett, AL took the ninth spot in the K-Line Logistics Rocket, and Jimmy Elliott of Cleveland, TN rounded out the top ten in the Car Smart Auto Sales Special.

In preliminary action, the two ten-lap KRC Power Steering B-Main races were won by Jimmy Thomas of Phenix City, AL in the Jenwood, Inc. Special and Johns.  With his Boyd Bilt Fabricators Fast Time Award, Ownbey earned the pole position for the main event, and he chose to start on the outside.

Ownbey and Williams raced the first lap side-by-side with Williams leading by a half car-length, but a multi-car tangle in turn four brought out the first the first of three caution flags, and necessitated a complete restart.  Ownbey got the lead on the restart and launched out to a three car-length advantage over Williams, Rainey, Skinner, and Jake Knowles.

Caution flag number two came out on lap three when the ageless legend 86-year-old Red Farmer of Hueytown, AL ended up against the turn four wall just past the pit gate.  Farmer was able to drive away, but his Long-Lewis Ford Rocket had too much damage to continue.

Ownbey led the field for the Dixie-Style Double-File Restart with Williams, Rainey, Skinner, Jake Knowles, Herrington, Wood, Dylan Knowles, Johns and Thomas doubled up behind him.  When the green bulb flashed on, Skinner raced to the inside of Rainey to take over the third spot.  By lap five, Rainey had faded back to sixth, as Jake Knowles, and Wood got by him for fourth and fifth respectively.

Ownbey had stretched out to a ten car-length advantage over Williams by the time he caught the cars on tail end of the lead lap on the 15th circuit.  Williams was camped out on Ownbey’s back bumper by lap 18, but with lapped cars racing two and three wide in front of them, the leaders were all dressed up with no place to go.

Williams stuck the nose of his race car up to Ownbey’s driver’s door on lap 20, but couldn’t make the pass in the heavy lapped traffic.  Ownbey found an opening on the outside going down the backstretch on lap 26 to break free of the lapped traffic, and left Williams and Skinner trapped behind a pair of lapped cars.

Ownbey had opened up a half straightaway lead on Williams by lap 30, but that was erased on lap 38 when the caution flag came out after Joe Denby of Tullahoma, TN spun his Denby J&J Construction Special in turn four.  The ensuing double-file restart bunched up the field, and cleared out the lapped cars for the dash to the checkered flag.

Ownbey had Williams, Skinner, Jake Knowles, Herrington, Wood, Rainey, Dylan Knowles, Johns, and Marcus Minga in the B&M Salvage Rocket doubled up behind him for the restart.  Ownbey was able to pull away from Williams and Skinner, who were racing side-by-side for the second spot.

Heavy lapped traffic was once again in front of Ownbey with five laps to go.  That enabled Williams and Skinner to close in.  After the white flag signaled one lap to go, Williams pushed up the banking in turn one, and Skinner was able to drive underneath for the second spot.  Skinner was unable to chase down Ownbey, who took the checkered flag with .597 margin of victory.

The second and third rounds of the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Salute To America Nationals will be held at Cochran Motor Speedway in Cochran, GA on Friday night and Saturday night.  The Friday show will pay $2,000-to-win for 40 laps, and the Saturday night event will pay $2,500-to-win for 50-laps.
